Products used in our Children’s Bedroom Furniture
Solid Wood
Solid Wood furniture is traditionally the natural first choice for quality furniture. They make furniture strong, durable, and beautiful to look at. However, it is also one of the most difficult products to work with.
Solid wood moves, and widens when exposed to moisture, and shrinks when it is dried. Many modern children’s bedroom furniture manufacturers have difficulty working with solid woods. Today’s insulated, double glazed and centrally heated homes can have a detrimental effect on solid timber furniture if the timbers are not completely dried.
Thuka and Scallywag are made from solid pine. Both Thuka and Cresta (manufacturers of Scallywag) source their pine trees deep in the forest and north of the 60th parallel. This is where the trees grow slower and develop fewer branches. Slower growing trees with fewer branches produce a much more stable wood to work with. The wood is then slowly kiln dried to guarantee less than 12% moisture
Thuka, in their plants manufacturing the Hit and Maxi ranges of children’s bedroom furniture, ensure that 100% of each tree cut down is used. The central part of the tree (the most stable part for making kids beds) is used in the manufacturer process. The Thuka woodchips are used to create paper, while the sawdust and tree bark is pressed into pellets and used as CO2 neutral fuel for heating the Thuka factories.
Thuka take great pride in using every part of the pine tree, and every tree used is replaced guaranteeing Thuka’s long term commitment to the life of the forest.
Chip Board is what it says it is, a board made from wood-chips. It is one of the most common board materials used in furniture construction, and generally speaking it is perfectly okay for light use. It must be veneered and edged to make it acceptable for furniture use, and often [in kitchen and children's furniture applications] is faced with hard-wearing melamine.
Both Parisot and Cilek use melamine coated chipboards for their children’s bedroom furniture. Both meet all relevant European Union Standards. The melamine coatings used are anti-carcinogenic, anti-bacterial and anti-allergenic. In some cases, these additional properties make these products better than natural solid wood in the production of children’s bedroom furniture.
MDF, Medium Density Fibreboard is a material made from bonded wood-dust. It has become very common in children's furniture. It offers excellent stability, durability and strength, and can be finished with a veneer or painted with excellent results.
Both Kidsaw and Thos Bailie use MDF for their children’s bedroom furniture. It allows for unique designs, while at very competitive prices.
Plastic Furniture
Little Tikes makes all their indoor and outdoor furniture from plastic. Plastic is a wonderful material that lets the designer explore new shapes that would be difficult or impossible with timber. It is light-weight, waterproof, knock-resistant and very strong. A fabulous product for incredible designs.
